Ten things for you Sunday from my week in pop culture
Jarvis Cocker DJing last night at Stroud’s Popup Subcultures weekend, at which they’ve been exploring “NeoAncients” - i.e folk cultures, longing for Albion, the messy complications of all that, folk horror in excelsis, and lots of great films and music. Jarvis went full bangers last night though. No, I didn’t note down the order of his set as I danced from beginning to end but it began with Planet Claire, ended with Army Dreamers, had Black Betty, Young Americans and Le Freak in the middle, and the utter thrill that is this, every time I hear it. (I used to go to the Trash nightclub at central London club The End, with Erol Alkan on the door, on many Monday nights in 2000 to 2001, and two songs were played every week: this and Blue Monday. Last night this transported me back to half my lifetime ago.)
Jeremy Deller’s Acid House to Brass Bands brainstorming map (featured in his event with the great Zakia Sewell). It makes me want to get out my Biros immediately and make my own spiderwebs.
